Hän oli aikaisemmin kiihkeä muslimi, joka oli mukana kaatamassa shaahin hallintoa ja perustamassa Iranin vallankumousarmeijaa. Hän joutui kuitenkin uuden hallinnon epäsuosioon, josta seurasi vankeus, pako Iranista, tutustuminen kristinuskoon ja kristityksi kääntyminen.
